Nancy Goldman
Nancy Goldman is presently an adjunct faculty member at both of her alma maters, New York University and Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Goldman teaches Strategic Communication: Applications of Storytelling in the Workplace at NYU, and has presented a TedX talk about the power of personal storytelling. She has performed at “Word The Storytelling Show” and the “New York Story Exchange” and hosts a storytelling home concert in Queens, New York.
Nancy discovered personal storytelling in 2011 as a happy, accidental result of her doctoral dissertation, “I was studying how comedians learn to use humor to raise awareness about social and political issues (because I believe they are really the educators of our time). One of my findings was that they draw heavily on their personal experiences (in other words, tell stories) and use certain techniques to make them funny. I’ve worked in comedy clubs and have seen how powerful this is! Audiences lower their defenses, become receptive to hearing new thoughts and ideas, and they feel emotionally connected to the performers and to one another. I was inspired! So I set out to learn how to tell my story.”
People have been communicating through stories since time immemorial. In fact, neuroscience has shown that we are hard-wired to tell and listen to stories. There’s no better way to connect with one another. As author Patti Digh said, “The shortest distance between two people is a story.
Walter Goldman
Walter Goldman, a resident of Rockland County for 40 years, has always been an entrepreneur by figuring out how to meet the needs of others with business solutions. At 16 he started the Bagelnuts, a delivery service, which delivered fresh bagels and donuts to your door every Sunday before 9:00AM.
At 18, before fashionable, Walter started a small business that matched people together for dating which he aptly named Rockland Dating Service. In college, in upstate New York, Walter realized that many students needed to get their belongings to and from their downstate home and The College Carriers were born.
In an effort to continue to find ways to assist others by using technology, in 1985 at the beginning of the decentralization of distributed data processing, Walter started a company called Magnacom Data Products.
Walter sold his computer business in 2005 and after some stints in the financial industry started a business consulting firm in 2009. This consulting firm, Goldkap Consulting Group, provides a myriad of consulting solutions for many of today’s business challenges but the area Walter is most proud of is the work he does helping people with disabilities start their own businesses.
Walter is on the speaking circuit at schools throughout the tri-state area and has given multiple classes on how to make it as an entrepreneur in today’s economy.
In 2018, Walter starting working with his sister Nancy Goldman, in advancing her storytelling network throughout the NYC and surrounding area and became hooked. He joined her and is now entrenched alongside her as co-owner of Height Hub Storytelling.
Walter graduated from Pace University with a BBA in Marketing and is married with 4 children. Walter is a mentor for SCORE and sits on multiple local boards that include Rockland Business Owners Group, Bridges, Rockland Community College Foundation and Rockland Development Council.
