Job interviews are inherently stressful events that shine a spotlight on your ability to communicate. Telling a story is a powerful way to persuade and influence your listener. And information is more memorable when embedded in a story, so you’ll stand out to your listener. Being able to tell stories shows that you are an articulate candidate, and that you can organize your thinking in a coherent way that demonstrates temporal logic.
A study by Bangerter, Corvalan and Cavin (2014) found that recruiters gave higher recommendations for applicants who produced more stories. Moreover, statements of self-description, like “I’m a good communicator” decreased hiring recommendations. That means it’s not enough to remember the points you want to share on your interview, you also have to frame them as interesting and relevant narratives (Anderson and Killenberg, 1999, p. 179)
